Copyright & Licensing

Last Updated: August 2026

The Virtual Immersive Platform (VIP), developed by the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub at California State University, Northridge, provides access to educational materials, project outputs, digital resources, media, and other content created by the Hub and its broader community of partners and contributors. This policy explains how copyright and licensing apply to content available through VIP and what visitors should consider before using, reproducing, modifying, or sharing that content.

2. Using Content from VIP

Unless a resource includes a license or other statement granting permission for reuse, visitors should not assume that content may be freely reproduced, modified, redistributed, published, or used commercially.

You may view and access publicly available content for personal, educational, informational, or research purposes, subject to applicable copyright law and any terms associated with the individual resource.

Uses beyond those permitted by law or an applicable license may require permission from the copyright holder.

3. Downloadable Content

VIP may provide downloadable content, including:

  • Documents and publications
  • Presentations
  • Educational materials and toolkits
  • Images and media
  • Research and project materials
  • Software or code
  • Immersive and 3D assets
  • Other digital files

The ability to download a resource does not automatically grant permission to reproduce, modify, redistribute, publish, sell, sublicense, or otherwise reuse that resource.

Visitors should review any copyright notice, license, attribution requirement, README file, metadata, or other usage information provided with the resource.

4. Licensed Content

Some resources available through VIP may be distributed under a specific license.

Depending on the resource, this may include:

  • Creative Commons licenses
  • Open-source software licenses
  • Institutional licenses
  • Project-specific licenses
  • Other licensing agreements

When a specific license is provided, your use of that resource is subject to the terms of that license.

A license that applies to one resource should not be assumed to apply to other content available through VIP.

5. Attribution

Some resources may require attribution when they are reused, shared, adapted, or incorporated into another work.

Where attribution requirements are provided, users should follow the instructions associated with the resource.

Even when formal attribution is not required by a license, appropriate acknowledgment of creators, projects, institutions, and other contributors is encouraged in educational and research contexts.

6. Third-Party Content

VIP may include or provide access to content owned by third parties.

Third-party content remains subject to the rights, licenses, and restrictions established by its respective copyright holder.

The presence of third-party content on VIP does not mean that the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub or California State University, Northridge owns that content or has the authority to grant additional rights to it.

Users are responsible for complying with applicable third-party licenses and copyright requirements.

8. Software, Code, and Digital Assets

Software, source code, datasets, 3D models, immersive assets, templates, and other technical resources may be subject to licenses that differ from those applying to other materials on VIP.

Where a license is provided with a technical resource, the license accompanying that resource governs its use.

Users should review associated license files, documentation, attribution requirements, and usage restrictions before copying, modifying, distributing, or incorporating technical resources into another project.

9. Logos, Names, and Branding

Names, logos, trademarks, service marks, and other branding associated with the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub, California State University, Northridge, partner institutions, programs, and projects may be protected separately from other content.

Access to VIP does not grant permission to use institutional names, logos, trademarks, or branding in a way that suggests endorsement, sponsorship, partnership, or official affiliation without authorization.

10. Contributor and Project Content

VIP may feature materials created by students, educators, researchers, project teams, grantees, community organizations, or institutional partners.

Unless otherwise specified by an applicable agreement or license, the publication of such content through VIP should not be interpreted as changing its underlying copyright ownership.

Any rights granted to the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub or California State University, Northridge for hosting, displaying, distributing, or promoting contributed materials may be governed by separate program, grant, submission, or institutional agreements.

12. Questions About Reuse

If you would like to reuse a resource and no license or usage information is provided, please contact the identified creator or rights holder when available.

If the appropriate rights holder is unclear, you may contact the Global HSI Equity Innovation Hub for assistance identifying the appropriate contact.

The Hub cannot necessarily grant permission for materials owned by another individual, institution, organization, or third party.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Copyright & Licensing Policy as VIP evolves, additional resources become available, or institutional and legal requirements change.

The Last Updated date at the top of this page indicates when this policy was most recently revised.
